03/16/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Churro was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. During intake, the counselor reports he was calm as they opened his carrier and walked into another carrier when placed in front of him. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Observed Behavior – Exam in net – growling, then striking and hissing whenever touched. ENRICHMENT NOTES: 3/15/17 In den, hissed, spit, and struck den wall on approach. Making snorting or grunting sounds. Stuck head out, eyes dilated, ate nearby treats. Hissed when touched. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is re-arranged Reaction to assessor: Churro had a low body posture behind his den, becoming alert upon approach and hisses. Reaction when softly spoken to: Churro begins to growl and lip licks. Reaction to cage door opening: Churro does not allow the cage door to open, he charges to the front and strikes. He retreats to the back afterwards and continues to growl loudly. Due to this reaction, the behavior assessment was ended to reduce additional stress. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Unable to tell VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Independent POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Fearful – Churro has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior when handling is attempted. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: – Placement with a New Hope partner – Churro is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, scratch, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment, and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
