Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow
KNOWN HISTORY:: Chile was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: 01/14/18 Hissing and swatting in box
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 01/16/18 Lying beneath kuranda bed, body low and tense. Ears flatten as he makes eye contact. Swats bear-claw out of the way before it can reach him. Needs more time to adjust. Not interested in treats at the moment. 01/17/18 Lying in litterbox, body low and tense. Flattens ears and avoids eye contact. Shifts weight and begins to rapid breathe when spoken to. Flinches when I place treats down. Not interested in treats at the moment – too focused on me. Limited interaction due to stress. Needs more time to adjust. 01/18/18 Lying in back of kennel with a low, tense body, head lowered onto kennel floor. Raises head and makes eye contact when spoken to. Growls when I place treats in front of his cage. Not interested in interacting today – limited interaction at this time. Needs more time to adjust.
Cage Condition:: Cage is neat
Reaction to assessor:: Chile was tense and crouched in the back of the kennel with his ears bent flat.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Chile shrinks his body and doesn’t get up or come forward when coaxed.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Chile remains tense and keeps his eyes focused on the assessor’s movements.
Reaction to touch:: Chile low growls, leans away and hisses when the assessor extends his hand out. He quickly swats when approached, then shifts away to the other side of the double kennel.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Skittish,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Chile has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New hope only
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
RECOMMENDATIONS:: None
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Chile is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
