Hello, my name is Chester. My animal id is #12189. I am a desexed male white cat at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years old. – P
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 09-Nov-2017, with the surrender reason stated as person health – allergies.
Chester is at risk for behavior concerns (Experience determination). He displays conflicted behaviors; he seems to appreciate attention and will head-butt during interactions, but he whines at times and is wary of the environment. There is no noted medical condition for Chester at this time.

DVM Intake Exam Estimated age: 1yr Microchip noted on Intake? yes History: O/S due to allergies Subjective: Cat is BARH Observed Behavior – In litterbox at back of cage, hisses when approached. Hissing escalates to lunging and striking when cage opened, unable to net or examine without sedation. Evidence of Cruelty seen -no Evidence of Trauma seen -no Objective T = NA P = wnl R = wnl BCS 5/9 EENT: Eyes clear, ears clean, no nasal or ocular discharge noted Oral Exam: Healthy adult dentition PLN: No enlargements noted H/L: NSR, NMA, CRT < 2, Lungs clear, eupnic ABD: Non painful, no masses palpated U/G: wnl MSI: Ambulatory x 4, skin free of parasites, no masses noted, healthy hair coat CNS: Mentation appropriate – no signs of neurologic abnormalities Rectal: not performed Assessment: Apparently Healthy Prognosis: Excellent Plan: Acceptable candidate for adoption or rescue pending behavior evaluation. SURGERY: Already altered

Upon intake Chester was very alert and nervous. He allowed to be scanned and photographed however when being transferred into a carrier, he did attempt to flee. Chester hissed and swatted at an admissions counselor. Chester appeared nervous while inside the carrier. Scanned negative.

Basic Information:: Chester is an 3yr old DSH that was surrendered due to allergies. Chester was rescued from a shelter by the client. He has never suffered any health issues or injuries. Chester’s last visit to the vet was last may for a check up.
Previously lived with:: 2 adults,1 child ,1 cat
How is this cat around strangers?: Around Strangers Chester is friendly and will approach with a loose body. When strangers approach him, he will walk through their legs for attention.
How is this cat around children?: Chester has lived in the home with a pre-teen for the past 3 years. The child was very close with Chester. Chester slept in the child’s bed 90% of the time.he allowed to be fully handled by the child. Never displayed any behavior concerns.
How is this cat around other cats?: Chester lived in the home with his sibling Chelsea. Chester and the other cat would play, eat and sometimes use the litter box together. When no one was home Chester would often play hide and seek with the other feline stated by the previous owner. Chester was always friendly and affectionate with the other cat in the home.
How is this cat around dogs?: no experience with dogs.
Behavior Notes: Chester isn’t bothered by the following: being picked up or held, being brushed or groomed, being pushed off furniture,loud sounds or sudden movements. The previous owner initially gave Chester baths every month since she had him however, for 6 months she stop due to a illness. When she started bathing him again , he would attempt to run away in fear. she recently stopped trying to give him baths. Chester is fully house trained with no record of accidents.
Bite history:: Chester hasn’t bitten within the past 10 days. no known bite history.

For a New Family to Know: Chester is described as friendly, affectionate and loving. Chester was very involved with any home activities that took place with the people inside the home.If the owner was cooking in the kitchen he was near her. He was fed both wet and dry foods. The dry foods was dispensed through an automatic feeder.
KNOWN HISTORY:: Lived Indoors Previously lived with: 2 adults, 1 child, and 1 cat Behavior toward strangers: Friendly, will approach with a loose body and walk through their legs for attention Behavior toward children: Very close to the child and slept with them, allowed all handling Behavior toward cats: Friendly and affectionate. Other notes: Chester was very involved with any home activities that took place with the people inside the home. If the owner was cooking in the kitchen he was near her.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: Observed Behavior – In litter box at back of cage, hisses when approached. Hissing escalates to lunging and striking when cage opened, unable to net or examine without sedation.
Cage Condition:: Cage is slightly re-arranged
Reaction to assessor:: Chester is perched on his kuranda bed, looking around/
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Chester meows and whines a little, but will look at the assessor with almond-shaped eyes and continue looking around.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Chester becomes alert, but remains in place and continues to vocalize.
Reaction to touch:: Chester sniffs the assessor’s hand, meows, and head-butts. He leans in for cheek rubs and starts to roll over. He appears to appreciate attention and allow petting all over his body, but he also appears conflicted and will tense up when there is movement in the room. He will gently pat the assessor’s hand when pet too roughly, but will continue to rub his head against the assessor’s hand after.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Chester appreciates attention and petting, but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may need time to warm up to his new home and family. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. Due to his stress levels in the care center, we recommend any future home with children conduct a thorough interaction before adopting.
