Charley was placed at risk due to behavior. she is not thriving here at the care center and will benefit from placement as soon as possible. she hides and freezes on approach and is fearful.

During intake Charley was quiet. Charley allowed to be scanned and collared but remained shy. Charley allowed all handling.

Basic Information:: Charley is a 8 year old neutered gray tabby DSH. Charley was brought into ACC because his previous owner passed away.
How is this cat around strangers?: Around strangers Charley is shy for a few days. Charley plays gently with adults when he plays.
How is this cat around children?: Charley has not lived with children.
How is this cat around other cats?: Charley has lived with another cat over 5 years ago and was reported to be friendly with the other cat.
How is this cat around dogs?: Charley has not lived with other dogs
Behavior Notes: In car riders Charley is quiet. Charley has not been given a bath or had his nails trimmed before. Charley isnt bothered when being brushed or being placed in a carrier.
Bite history:: No known bite history.

For a New Family to Know: Charley was described as friendly shy and independent. Charley liked to play with stuffed cat nip toys. while with the finder Charley mostly stayed hidden under the couch. Charley ate wet and dry food and is use to the brand fancy feast. Charley is litter box trained and used an uncovered litter box with fresh step litter. Charley had a scratching post made of carpet and did not scratch anything else in the home.

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: Allows exam
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 12/19/17 Lying in litterbox with a tense body, ears flat. He makes eye contact as I open the kennel door and backs away, tail wrapping around body. Tolerates petting along head and body while turning to head slowly to watch my hand. Needs more time to adjust.

Reaction to assessor:: Charley was curled in the back of the cubby with his eyes focused on the assessor.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Charley slow blinks and doesn’t come forward when coaxed.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Charley tenses up and is wary of his surroundings.
Reaction to touch:: Charley slow blinks and lowers his head when the assessor extends his hand out. His body tenses up when pet and he remains completely immobile throughout the interaction. He seems wary of his surroundings and prefers slow movements.

Potential challenges comments:: Charley has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may dislike certain types of handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step.
