ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 12/18/17 Lying in back of kennel with a tense body. Makes eye contact and flattens ears when spoken to, then begins to stress meow and hiss. Swats the bear-claw out of the way before it can touch him. Uncomfortable – needs more time to adjust. 12/19/17 Stress meowing in front of kennel with a low body, ears tilted. Makes eye contact and reaches out towards me as I place treats in his kennel, claws unextended. He sniffs and paws with treats but does not eat them – keeps looking outside into the room. Focused on environment. He tolerates petting along her head and body with the bear-claw while turning his head to smell it, tail lowered and body tense. Curious but unsure. Needs some time to adjust. 12/20/17 At front of kennel, body low and ears forward. Vocalizes softly when spoken to, then flinches and backs away slightly when the cage door opens. He tolerates petting initially, turning his head to smell the bear-claw and then begins o lean in. He allows touch along his head and body while raising his tail half-way and rolling over onto his side. He bats at the bear-claw (no claws) and pulls it closer to his face so he can scent mark it. Rolls around kennel floor and continues to head-butt the bear-claw. Tail begins to wave back and forth and he stress meows as the bear-claw passes along his lower back. Doing much better than yesterday! Beginning to warm up! Playful, shows signs of overstimulation of petting induced aggression. Ate all treats given.

Reaction to assessor:: Casper was tense, wary and rises up when the assessor approaches the kennel.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Casper’s ears bend slightly and he stress meows when spoken to softly.

His body arches, tail rises and he gives head butts and allows petting all over his body. He rolls around playfully but still seems a little wary of his surroundings and retreats whenever he hears a loud noise.
Reaction to being picked up:: Casper backs away and grumbles when the assessor attempted to pick him up.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate
VOCAL:: Talkative
CHARACTER TYPE: : Sweet,Affectionate,Timid
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,Uncomfortable with pick up
Potential challenges comments:: Casper has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may dislike certain types of handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. Casper did not appear to like being picked up during their behavior evaluation. Please keep in mind there are many reasons why a cat may be uncomfortable with this type of handling and that this may not necessarily translate into a home environment. We recommend any future home with children be counseled in respecting the cat’s space and for the family to use care when picking him up, especially while he is still adjusting to his new home.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Experience
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
RECOMMENDATIONS:: None
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Casper may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. He may have some behavioral issues that will need to be addressed in the home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
