She does not appear to be thriving in the shelter environment; she displays fearful behavior and hides when approached for interaction. She does not allow petting at will display distance-increasing behaviors to prevent contact.

It seems she was unhappy being separated from her kittens. She allowed transferred from carrier to den without any issues. Client stated that Casey is a feral cat that he and his family have been caring for the past year. She happened to get herself pregnant and gave birth to 4 kittens. Now the client’s neighbors are complaining about Casey and are making threats to the client. At this time, client decided to bring Casey and her kittens to SIACC.

KNOWN HISTORY: Casey was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: examined in net, tries to flee EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Casey is hiding in her den with her kittens. Reaction when softly spoken to: Casey remains motionless in her den. Reaction to cage door opening: Casey continues to rest in her den. She looks at the assessor through the holes in her den. Reaction to touch: Casey was slowly approached with the assessor hand. She began to hiss and swat at the hand. She appears very nervous and uncomfortable. Casey did not come out of her den and remained inside with her kittens. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Mellow VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Timid, Bold, Independent RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only- Casey is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat\scratch, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
