08/05/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Cantaloupe was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Launches into air, bites indiscriminately. Screams when touched ENRICHMENT NOTES: 08/02/17 Lying in center of kennel, huddled next to sibling. Smells bear-claw cautiously when I place it on the floor. Backs away and tilts ears as I lift the bear-claw, tolerates petting along head and body while hissing and retreating through portal. Needs more time to adjust. Sprayed feliway. 08/03/17 Curled up by back of kennel next to sibling. Alert, sniffs when approached. Focuses on hand and shifts away as I reach forward. Hisses repeatedly during interaction. Will slowly shift away, but doesn’t show any other distance – increasing behaviors. Will eat treats, but still very tense, tolerating petting along head and body. Needs time to warm up. Sprayed feliway. 08/05/17 Pressed up against the back wall of the cage. She hisses then looks around and scans her surroundings for an exit. Low body posture, alert and tense. She scurries away and dodges my hand when attempting to touch her. Very tense, continues hissing, flinches slightly but tolerates touch. Rapid breathing, very nervous. She doesn’t display any other distance increasing behaviors. Wasn’t interested in tuna. Needs more time to adjust. Sprayed feliway. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish, Affectionate, People Oriented POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Kitten socialization – Cantaloupe is a young cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. She may be apprehensive of people, but the behavior team believes she has potential to warm up to people. Kittens less than 8 weeks of age can be socialized by almost anyone; however, kittens between 2-4 months may require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people. Please speak to an adoption counselor to learn more about socialization techniques. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced, adult home only – Cantaloupe tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
