07/10/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Cali was brought in with limited information on her behavior in her previous home. She came from a home with multiple cats and was reported to be under-socialized with people. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Observed Behavior – hisses during exam, does not like to be restrain ENRICHMENT NOTES: 07/09/17 Lying in litter box with a low, tense body, face partially hidden by the box’s ledge. She tolerates petting along her head and body while tilting her ears and backing away slightly, whiskers pulled back and face very tense. Not interested in treats today. Needs more time to adjust. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Cali was lying down and appears alert while looking at the assessor. Reaction when softly spoken to: Cali’s eyes dart back and forth from the assessor and the room. Reaction to cage door opening: Cali flinches from noise and focuses on the opening. Reaction to touch: Cali remains stiff, but flees as soon as she is touched. She lowers her body in her other kennel space and is more tolerant of gentle petting, but she hisses when she feels uncomfortable and shifts away to avoid further contact. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Cannot evaluate VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Timid, Skittish, Independent POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Fearful – Cali has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and will attempt to flee with extended handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: – Experienced, adult home only – Cali tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may need time to warm up to her new home and family. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
