08/11/2017 AT RISK MEMO
Caillou A1119259 is at risk for behavior concerns in the shelter environment. He seems to be easily over aroused and was initially difficult to handle, though he shows great interest in training (clicker training) and is highly food-motivated, responding very well to learning new skills during enrichment sessions, but we are concerned that we cannot meet his behavioral needs and he will quickly deteriorate in the shelter.

Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Lived Indoors Previously lived with: 1 Adult and 2 other cats Behavior toward strangers: Displays distance increasing behaviors Behavior toward children: Spent time around a young child and was relaxed, affectionate, and respectful Behavior toward cats: Lived with 2 cats. He was tolerant of one and displayed distance increasing behaviors towards the other. Behavior toward dogs: Unknown Bite or Scratch history: Yes, he bit one of the other cats living in the home (3 yrs. ago) Litter box training: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Affectionate, playful, and aggressive at times with a medium activity level Other notes: He doesn’t mind having his coat brushed but will move away after a few minutes. Okay being picked up/held and walks into a carrier when you place food inside. He is currently on Prozac for his aggressive behavior. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Needed to be sedated for exam ENRICHMENT NOTES: 08/10/17 Sitting crouched in front of kennel, hissing and growling as I enter the room. Yowls loudly as I lift the cage cover and hisses. He eats the tuna I place in front of him while grumbling. I click and reward each time he sniffs my hand, then each time he sniffs my hand without growling or hissing. He responds well to the clicker training and is now sitting upright in front of the kennel, no longer hissing. He remains calm and sniffs my hand each time I hold it out towards him. He gives the kennel door one head-butt towards the end of the interaction. Very uncomfortable, needs time to adjust. Food motivated and loves tuna. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is slightly re-arranged Reaction to assessor: Caillou was lying down at the front and starts to growl and hiss when you approach his kennel. Reaction when softly spoken to: Caillou yowls and continues to growl with his eyes focused on the assessor’s movements. Reaction to cage door opening: Caillou hisses and remains focused on the assessor’s hand. Reaction to touch: Caillou rises up, continues hissing and raises his paw up ready to swat. He pauses then lip licks and slowly leans forward when the assessor extends his hand and sniffs. He seems conflicted and slowly leans in allowing gentle pets on his head. His tail sways back and forth, and he gently leans in and gives head butts when you approach him slowly. He seems very stressed and can only tolerate very brief slow interactions before getting agitated and displaying distance increasing behaviors.
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Caillou has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced, adult home only – Caillou tolerates attention and petting but may be stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. He may have some behavioral issues that will need to be addressed in the home. The enrichment team has been working with him and has been clicker training him to be more comfortable around people. He’s been showing some improvement and allows limited handling but is still stressed and needs more time to adjust to his environment. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home. No other cats OR multi-cat home with adopters experienced with introducing new cats – Please be aware that Caillou may be uncomfortable around other cats. Their previous owner reports that he lived with 2 cats and was tolerant of one but displayed distance increasing behaviors towards the other and bit him. Due to the described behaviors, we recommend Caillou goes to a home with no other cats OR into a multi-cat home with cat parents experienced with introducing new cats slowly and gradually over a long period of time.
