04/24/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Brice was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. His finder reports he runs away and tries to hide. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Observed Behavior – Fractious. Tries to bite. ENRICHMENT NOTES: 04/23/17 Sitting crouched in kennel with a low body and flattened ears. He watches me as I approach and tenses his face when I open his kennel door. He gives a hard hiss and swats as I approach with the bear-claw. Needs some more time to adjust. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is slightly re-arranged Reaction to assessor: Brice was crouched over by the back and focuses on the assessor. Reaction when softly spoken to: Brice’s eyes soften and he blinks gently. Reaction to cage door opening: Brice becomes alert and hisses. Reaction to touch: Brice focuses on the assessor’s hand, hissing and growling. He does not allow touch; his ears bend flat against his head and he swats the assessor’s hand. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Cannot assess VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish, Independent BEHAVIOR SUMMARY: Please note that this cat is being treated for a medical condition at the time of evaluation. It is difficult to determine at this time how the medical condition may be affecting the behavior. RECOMMENDATIONS: – Placement with a New Hope partner – Brice is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment, and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
