09/06/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Brett was timid and didn’t allow handling upon intake. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Nervous but tolerates all medical handling with no resistance ENRICHMENT NOTES: 09/05/17 Crouched in back of kennel, ears forward and smelling the air curiously. Tolerates petting while lowering body and tilting ears. Likes treats. Needs some time to adjust. 09/05/17 Lying beneath kuranda bed, ears forward and eyes wide. Tail is wrapped around body. He eats the treats I place down and allows petting along his head and body while remaining still and looking around the room. Tense and nervous, backs away with continued petting. Most nervous out of siblings. Needs more time to adjust. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is re-arranged Reaction to assessor: Brett was curled up and hiding underneath his kuranda bed. Reaction when softly spoken to: Brett doesn’t get up or come forward when coaxed. Reaction to cage door opening: Brett remains motionless. Reaction to touch: Brett has wide eyes focused on the assessor and leans away when he extends his hand out. She keeps her tail wrapped around her body, tolerates petting and appears uncomfortable. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Timid POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Brett has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may dislike certain types of handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced cat parent Brett may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
