He is a handsome kitty who needs a place to decompress and regroup. Everyone knows creamsicle boys are the friendliest and we are sure that once Boots feels safe and secure, he will return to his normal charming, creamsicle self. I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 17-Dec-2017, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- no time for animal.

Boots is at risk for behavior reasons. He is stressed in the shelter, and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. For this reason, Boots requires placement only with a New Hope partner. Medically, we recommend Boots have dental treatment, but he is otherwise a healthy cat.

Upon intake, Boots allowed being collared and having his picture taken. Boots was receptive to touch and appreciated petting but once he began walking around and sniffing the smells, he began hissing. Boots became very uncomfortable very fast and then escalated to swatting but did not take his claws out. Boots had to be put into a freeman net in order to be transported into a carrier.

Basic Information:: Boots is a 5 year old neutered domestic short hair that the owner got from a friend. The owner has had Boots since he was about a month old. The owner is surrendering because he does not have time to care for Boots. The owner last took Boots to the vet 3-4 years ago for a routine check, the owner does not know of any injuries or health concerns about Boots.

How is this cat around strangers?: Around strangers, Boots is described as shy but then he quickly warms up and becomes very friendly.
How is this cat around children?: Boots has never been around children.
How is this cat around other cats?: Boots lived with one cat for a month once and he was relaxed and respectful with the other cat, they always played gently.
How is this cat around dogs?: Boots has never been around dogs.
Behavior Notes: During car rides, Boots meows a little bit. Boots is not bothered when his nails are trimmed or when he is picked up and held. Boots is afraid and struggles when he is bathed. Boots enjoys when his coat is brushed. Boots struggles when he is put into a carrier. Boots hisses when he is disturbed while he sleeps.
Bite history:: Boots has never bitten or scratched another animal or person.

For a New Family to Know: Boots is described as friendly, affectionate, playful, and curious. Boots has a low level of energy. The owner’s favorite thing about Boots is that he is affectionate and plays fetch. Boots’ favorite thing to do is sit on heated blankets. When the owner is home, Boots follows him around. Boots likes balls and catnip toys. Boots has been kept indoors only. Boots sleeps mostly on the owner’s bed. Boots is fed Merrick dry food with an automatic feeder, three times a day and is fed only a ¼ of a cup every feeding. Boots is also fed 1 can of Merrick wet food in the evening. Boots’ favorite treats are dental treats. Boots uses a hooded litter box with clumping litter. Boots uses a scratching post made out of rough rope and smooth wood.

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: Observed Behavior – lunging and hissing
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 12/18/17 In den on approach. Stuck head out when door opened, eyes dilated, started hissing. Sniffed assess-a-hand, then retreated back into den and started deep growling. Left alone for now. 12/19/17 In den on approach, hissing. Stuck head out when cage cover lifted, started hissing louder and growling, eyes dilated. Continued vocalizing when door opened. Withdrew back into den to avoid touch. 12/20/17 In den on approach, head already poking out, eyes fully dilated. Hissed and whined when cage cover lifted. Leaned forward to sniff assess-a-hand when offered treats, stopped hissing. Actually allowed gentle head pets!
Cage Condition:: No change
Reaction to assessor:: Boots remains tense, hiding in the cat den during the approach.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Boots hisses and focuses with eyes dilated.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Boots remains in place, ears erect and forward.
Reaction to touch:: Boots avoids contact, but head is out from the den and eats in place when given soft food. When attempted to pet however, he hisses and growls while increasing distance.
