***SAFE 10/24/17*** HANDSOME BLACKJACK WAS AFFECTIONATE WITH A CHILD, OTHER CATS AND A LARGE BREED DOG!! Yet his owner decided to dump him at the shelter and say he could no longer care for him. Blackjack had some issues with the litterbox but with the other animals in the home, it may not have been his fault. The owner said he did NOT take Blackjack to the vet for this problem. BLACKJACK is a healthy 1 year old with no known previous medical issues. He has also been neutered. PLEASE ADOPT BLACKJACK BY RESERVING HIM NOW BEFORE NOON!!
MANHATTAN CENTER
Hello, my name is Blackjack. My animal id is #9346. I am a desexed male black tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 weeks old. – P
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 10-Oct-2017, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- cannot afford to care for.
Blackjack 9346 is at risk for behavior concerns (Experience determination). He has tolerated gentle touch but remains uncomfortable with interaction and is unlikely to thrive in the busy adoption room. Due to his timidity we recommend adopters with some previous cat experience, who will allow him to warm up to his new home and new family at his own pace. There is no noted medical condition for Blackjack at this time.
Let’s get to know each other a bit more…
KNOWN HISTORY: Lived Indoors Previously lived with: 2 adults, 1 child, 3 cats, 1 dog Behavior toward strangers: Blackjack is shy for days around strangers and will hide away until they leave. Behavior toward children: Blackjack lived with a 10 year old child and is relaxed and playful with her. Blackjack plays gently with them. Behavior toward cats: Blackjack has lived with his mother and litter mates. He is relaxed and affectionate with them and plays gently with them. Behavior toward dogs: Blackjack lived with a large breed 1 year old dog and is relaxed and affectionate with him. They don’t play together. Bite or Scratch history: None Litter box training: Yes However, Blackjacks previous owner reports that he was eliminating (urinating and defecating) outside the litter box around the house, but we are unaware of what, if any, modification steps were taken to try and address this behavior. Please note as well that Blackjacks previous living situation may have contributed to the behavior seen (cat previously lived in a home with 3 other unaltered cats who all shared a single litter box). We cannot be sure whether this behavior will continue in a different home environment, but we recommend that potential adopters be comfortable with management and modification techniques for elimination outside the litter box should this behavior continue in a home environment. We also recommend that Blackjack be provided with numerous litter boxes throughout the house as he adjusts to his new living space. The extra boxes can be removed as he/she learns the space and successfully defecates in his main litter boxes. Energy level/descriptors: low energy level Other notes: Blackjack is affectionate, playful, mellow, independent cat. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Observed Behavior -allows exam, nervous ENRICHMENT NOTES: 10/11/17 Curled up asleep in cubby, woke when door opened. Kept head down, eyes dilated, wary. Tolerated brief pets, then started lip licking and curled up tighter. Sprayed feliway. Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Blackjack remains tense, crouched position at the back during the approach. Reaction when softly spoken to: Blackjack remains immobile in place. Reaction to cage door opening: Blackjack shows no interest, alert with eyes wide open, ears erect and forward. Reaction to touch: Blackjack accepts the touch, but tightly curls up in place with no further interest with the interaction. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Timid Independent BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: Experience Behavior Asilomar TM – Treatable-Manageable BEHAVIOR SUMMARY: Blackjack may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
