***SAFE 10/15/17*** BRAVE BLACK USED TO “PROTECT” HIS OWNER BUT TONIGHT WE NEED TO PROTECT POOR BLACK!! Poor Black was dumped at the shelter due to medical. He was found as a kitten on the street by the owners daughter when she saw kids beating him up. Owner said he is old and says he’s around 20 yrs old. The ACC thinks he is about 5 years of age upon examination because his condition is not that of an old cat. Black was said to be vocal and meow when he wants food or water. Black is shy and needs a loving new home with pet parents that will allow him time to decompress. Please help this poor guy today. MUST RESERVE BLACK BY NOON!!

Behavior Assessment Date: 10/4/2017 KNOWN HISTORY: Black was brought in with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment. His previous owner reports he is shy and will hide from people. He behaved like a guard cat and will protect the owner from any noise he hears. He will meow when he wants attention or needs food and water. He was reported to always use the litter box. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Observed Behavior -striking, growling. exam in net ENRICHMENT NOTES: 10/02/17 Sitting hunched in front of kennel, tail wrapped around body and body tense. He tolerates petting along his head and body while backing away and pulling his whiskers back, ears flattening. Leans away from touch. Uncomfortable- needs more time to adjust. 10/03/17 Sitting crouched in center of kennel, body tense. He leans away and squints his eyes as I reach towards him with the bear-claw, then tolerates petting along his head and body while backing away and stiffening his body, tail wrapping around him. Whips head around and gives the bear-claw one hard swat with continued interaction. Not comfortable with touch at this time. Needs more time to adjust. Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Black looks at the assessor with almond-shaped eyes and appears neutral. Reaction when softly spoken to: Black chirps and lowers his gaze. Reaction to cage door opening: Black becomes stiff and alert, and then focuses on the cage door. Reaction to touch: Black focuses on the assessor’s hand and shifts away to avoid contact. He swats hard without nails when petting was attempted and does not allow touch at this time. Reaction to being picked up: Did not attempt. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Bold Independent BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: New hope only Behavior Asilomar TM – Treatable-Manageable RECOMMENDATIONS: None BEHAVIOR SUMMARY: Black is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
