02/13/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
02/13/17 20:02 Bizzy is fearful of strangers and will swat if approached too fast instead of them letting her sniff them out. She’s lived with her owner’s 7 year old daughter and would try to play with her but since the daughter is fearful of her, they did not play much. Bizzy did try to play gently with the daughter and plays gently with adults. She’s never spent time around dogs or other cats. She has also never bitten another animal or human. When she goes on car rides, Bizzy cries the whole time. Her owner never gave her a bath or trimmed her nails so it’s unknown how she would react but she does love getting brused. She swats when people go to pick her up and will struggle and swat some more when her owner tries to place her inside of a carrier. When she’s awoken from her slumber, Bizzy looks up at her owner and then goes right back to sleep. Bizzy’s owner describes her as friendly, affectionate, mellow, and independent. She has a medium activity level but when she’s ready to play, enjoys string, wand and catnip toys. Her owner loves how she listens when she talks and lays on the outside of the bathtub rim when her owner’s taking a bath. She’s kept indoors only and likes to sleep on her owner’s bed. She’s litter box trained and will only go potty in her hooded litterbox full of crystal litter. She scratches on the couch and is uninterested by her scratching post so she never uses it. Her owner feeds her Meow Mix dry with a little Fancy Feast once in a while, and will fill up Bizzy’s bowl with dry food whenever she wants it. Counselor did not handle Bizzy because she hissed and swatted when she began to open carrier door and she did not want to stress him out even more.

02/16/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Indoor and/or Outdoor? Indoors Previously lived with: Adults and a 7 year old child Behavior toward children: Attempted to play, but the child was fearful of her Behavior toward strangers: Fearful, will swat if approached too fast without letting her sniff them first Behavior toward cats or dogs: Unknown Scratch history: Will swat when scared Litter box training: Yes, uses a hooded litter box with crystal litter Energy level/descriptors: Bizzy’s owner describes her as friendly, affectionate, mellow, and independent. She has a medium activity level but when she’s ready to play, enjoys string, wand and catnip toys. Other notes: Her owner loves how she listens when she talks and lays on the outside of the bathtub rim when her owner’s taking a bath. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Hissing, yowling, growling, jumping in net. Tolerated only a shred of examination. ENRICHMENT NOTES: 2/14/17 Extremely tense. Hunched in place, eyes dilated, whiskers straight out, stiff posture. Started deep growling and constant hissing on approach. 2/15/17 In feral den, started hissing and deep growling on approach. Stuck head out when spoken to, continued hissing and growling, some lip licking. Quieted eventually, pulled head back in, turned away, appeared to go to sleep. EVALUATION: Reaction to assessor: Bizzy had a low body posture, alert and tense when approached. Reaction when softly spoken to: Bizzy focuses on the assessor, but has almond-shaped eyes. She grumbles a bit with her ears tilted sideways. Reaction to cage door opening: Bizzy becomes stiff and alert, hissing. Reaction to touch: Bizzy snarls and focuses on the assessor’s hand. She will growl and allow brief touch on her head with an extremely slow approach, but will shift away and hiss hard. She will swat if petting is attempted again. POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: _x_ Fearful – Bizzy has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
RECOMMENDATIONS: _x_ Placement with a New Hope partner – Bizzy is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.

02/13/2017 INITIAL PHYSICAL EXAM
Medical rating was 3 NC – MAJOR CONDITIONS NOT CONTAGIOUS, behavior rating was NONE
2/13/17 Sex: Female, reported spayed Scan: Negative Estimated age: Former owner owned cat for 10 years and estimated that the cat was 22 years old. This seems highly unlikely given the energy level of this cat, so I am downgrading age to 15. That is still a very general estimate as a complete exam was difficult to do. Fleas: No flea dirt. S: Hissing, yowling, growling, jumping in net. Tolerated only a shred of examination. O: BAR, MMs pink EENT: No discharge OU, nose. H/L: NSR, NMA. Eupnic, quiet lung sounds. Growling. Abd: No masses palpated but difficult to assess M/S/I: Amb x4. No skin lesions noted. UG: Female A: Apparently healthy but very minimal exam. Exact age is unclear but pt is geriatric. Short-term prognosis: Good SURGERY: Permanent waiver due to age. P: No treatment needed at this time. Attempt more complete exam in a few days. 1088

Bizzy had a rough start in the shelter environment, which is no surprise since this mature lady was yanked from her home and deposited into strange and scary surroundings. After a few days, however, her attitude seems to have come full circle. Instead of hiding and hissing, she comes to the front of her kennel, seeks out attention and appreciates petting. She’s a good girl and she deserves a good home.
