Hello, my name is Bella. My animal id is #10602. I am a desexed female brown tabby cat at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 1 weeks old. – P
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 23-Oct-2017, with the surrender reason stated as animal behaviour – destructive tendencies.
10/31/17 5:17pm Bella is at risk for behavior concerns (Experience determination)Bella may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. also previous owners report that she was eliminating (urinating and defecating) outside the litter box for the past 3 months.

[DVM Intake] DVM Intake Exam Estimated age: approx. 4 years Microchip noted on Intake? No History : Presents as owner surrender. Shy- tries to flee but allows handling with minimal restraint. No hissing / swatting. Subjective: Evidence of Cruelty seen – No Evidence of Trauma seen – No Objective P = 180 R = 30 BCS 5/9 EENT: Eyes clear, ears clean, no nasal or ocular discharge noted Oral Exam: Adult dentition- moderate tartar with gingivitis PLN: No enlargements noted H/L: NSR, NMA, CRT < 2, Lungs clear, eupnic ABD: Non painful, no masses palpated U/G: Spayed female, spay scar noted MSI: Ambulatory x 4, skin free of parasites, no masses noted, healthy hair coat CNS: Mentation appropriate – no signs of neurologic abnormalities Assessment: Dental Disease, Gingivitis Prognosis: Excellent Plan: Recommend dental cleaning, No medications necessary at this time

Bella was unwilling to come out of the carrier and tried to flee when counselor put her on the table.

Is this cat having litter box issues?: Yes
Basic Information:: Bella is a 4 year old DSH female who was spayed prior to coming into the shelter. She has no known health issues and last saw a vet within the year.
If yes, Please elaborate:: Within the last three months Bella has been having accidents all over the owners house daily. She stated that three months ago her husband passed away and the change in the cats behavior started after, she believes Bella misses her husband and is acting out due to the change. She stated Bella had very good litter box habits prior.

How is this cat around strangers?: Bella is shy when guests enter the home, she typically hides and will not come out for attention.
How is this cat around children?: Bella has not spent time around children.
How is this cat around other cats?: Bella has lived with 2 other female cats who were spayed and her owner stated she was playful with them.
How is this cat around dogs?: Bella has not spent time around dogs.
Behavior Notes: Bella’s owner has not bathed her before and has not brushed her. She stated she has tried to trim her nails but she will struggle and try to bite her when restrained. She does not allow her owner to pick her up and struggles to be placed in a carrier.

Energy level/descriptors:: Medium
For a New Family to Know: Bella is described as being shy, fearful and independent. She rarely seeks attention and stays in her favorite spot most of the day. She likes to play with string toys, wands, and laser pointers. She has been an indoor cat and sleeps at the foot of her owners bed. She eats both wet and dry food and is litter box trained to go in an uncovered box with clumping litter. She uses a scratching post made from rough rope and carpet.

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: Shy- tries to flee but allows handling with minimal restraint. No hissing / swatting.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 10/24/17 Lying in back of kennel with a flat, tense body. Face is concealed by blanket. She tolerates petting along her head and body while turning to watch my hand, ears flat and face tense. Needs more time to adjust. 10/25/17 Lying in back of kennel with a low body, ears flat. Makes eye contact when spoken to, then looks away. Tolerates petting while lifting head and turning to watch the bear-claw, ears flattening further. Face is tense. Not interested in treats at the moment. Needs more time to adjust.

Reaction to assessor:: Bella was tense and lying down in the back of the kennel with her tail wrapped around her body.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Bella makes eye contact, lip licks and doesn’t come forward when coaxed.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Bella remains motionless.
Reaction to touch:: Bella lip licks and slowly turns her head away when approached. She tolerates petting, lowers her head and continues to lip lick throughout the interaction. Her body feels tense and she’s not confident enough to come forward when coaxed.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back
VOCAL:: Quiet

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Inappropriate elimination
Potential challenges comments:: Bella’s previous owners report that she was eliminating (urinating and defecating) outside the litter box for the past 3 months. We are unaware of what, if any, modifications steps were taken to try and address this behavior in the home, so we cannot be sure what the trigger may have been or if this behavior may continue in a future home. However, we recommend that potential adopters be comfortable with management and modification techniques for elimination outside the litter box should this behavior continue in a home environment.
