Beigie A0798009 is at risk for concerns that she is not thriving in the shelter environment. She is sweet, social, purrs loudly but does get a little uncomfortable when touched on her lower back. She gives clear signs she’s uncomfortable; she vocalizes, whips around and raises her paw up as a warning.

06/18/17 15:58 Basic information: Beigie is a 10 year old spayed female DSH. As per owner, Beigie does not have any previous or current medical issues. Owner has had Beigie for 10 years but had to surrender due to personal problems. Socialization: According to the owner, around strangers Beigie can either be friendly and outgoing or shy depending on the person she is interacting with. Beigie has been around owner’s 7 year old grandchild on a daily basis and owner stated that when the child was a baby, Beigie would playful swat at the baby to get her to play. Around the child now, Beigie is always relaxed and respectful. Owner had another cat for a few months at one point and stated that Beigie would hiss at the kitten whenever the kitten approached her. Owner also had 2 rabbits in the home at point and stated that she was always respectful around the animals. Beigie does not have a bite history. Behavior: Beigie is not bothered by being picked up and held, being put into a carrier or if someone disturbs her while she is sleeping. Owner tried to bathe her a few years ago and stated that Beigie became very scared and ran away. Beigie ended up scratching the owner but never broke skin while trying to flee. Owner has never tried to trim her nails so behavior is unknown. For a new Family to Know: Beigie’s family would describe her as friendly, affectionate, mellow and quiet. She has a low activity level and likes to sit by the window or lounge around the house. Owner stated that in the home, Beigie would prefer to stay in her favorite spot unless the owner was eating then she would follow the owner around. Owner fed Beigie dry food only brand Caboodles and Purina. Beigie was kept indoors only and is mostly litter box trained. Over the last 6 months, owner stated that she would urinate and defecate outside of the litter box and owner thinks it is because she moved and Beigie is stressed out. In the home, she used a hooded litter box with clumping litter. Owner did not have a scratching post in the home but did state that Beigie would like to scratch on walls and the window sill.

KNOWN HISTORY: Lived Indoors Previously lived with: Adults Behavior toward strangers: Can be friendly and outgoing or shy depending on the person she is interacting with Behavior toward children: Relaxed and respectful Behavior toward cats: Spent time around a kitten and would hiss whenever they approached her Behavior toward dogs: Unknown Bite or Scratch history: None Litter box training: Yes, but for the past 6 months she’s been urinating and defecating outside the litter box Energy level/descriptors: Friendly, affectionate, mellow and quiet with a low activity level Other notes: She lived with 2 rabbits and was always respectful of them. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Hissing throughout exam ENRICHMENT NOTES: 06/22/17 At front of kennel, making eye contact with soft eyes. Begins to purr when spoken to. She remains in the front as I open the kennel door and allows petting along her head and body, leaning in with tail raised. Head-butts my hand and arms with continued petting. Doing great! EVALUATION: Cage Condition: No change Reaction to assessor: Beigie meows softly then comes forward to greet the assessor. Reaction when softly spoken to: Beigie purrs softly and gently rubs her cheeks against the cage door. Reaction to cage door opening: Beigie is calm and relaxed. Reaction to touch: Beigie nuzzles against the assessor and purrs softly when pet along her body. She leans in for rubs, gives soft head butts and appreciates attention. She meows loudly then whips around and swats when touched on her lower back. Reaction to being picked up: Beigie was calm, relaxed and allows all handling. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Lively VOCAL: Somewhat chatty CHARACTER TYPE: Calm, Social, Affectionate POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Inappropriate elimination – Beigie ‘s previous owners report that she was eliminating (urinating and defecating) outside the litter box for 6 months]. We are unaware of what, if any, modifications steps were taken to try and address this behavior in the home, so we cannot be sure what the trigger may have been or if this behavior may continue in a future home. However, we recommend that potential adopters be comfortable with management and modification techniques for elimination outside the litter box should this behavior continue in a home environment.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced cat parent – Beigie may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
