03/02/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Unknown ENRICHMENT NOTES: 02/28/17 Bee is sitting with Dee butt-to-butt in a rear corner of the kennel. Both are tense and wary; able to touch both but they are still uncomfortable with the touching. 03/02/17 Bee and Dee are back in a kennel together, Dee was rejected for S/N at Glendale; of the pair she is the more fearful. Although they tend to lie together, they’re on either ends of the kennel this morning. With a slow approach they allow touching all over, but are uncomfortable with it. Need time to adjust, have already endured a very stressful stay here. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage slightly re-arranged Reaction to assessor: Bee was curled up in her litter box at the back of the kennel. Reaction when softly spoken to: Bee lowers her head and sinks lower into the litter box. Reaction to cage door opening: Bee lies motionless. Reaction to touch: Bee lowers her head when the assessor approaches and has a tense/stiff body when touched. She sinks low and tries to become invisible, starts lip licking and starts to breathe rapidly with prolonged interactions. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back, and another if applicable VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful- Bee has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced, adult home only- Bee tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home who understands this cat may need time to warm up to her new home and family at her own pace.
