Details on my behavior are…
Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow
KNOWN HISTORY:: Barbosa was brought in as a stray, so there is no information on their behavior history or tendencies in a home environment. She was reported to be following the finder, so the finder brought her to the care center.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: Observed Behavior -tail up, allows exam, hissed swatted after blood draw
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 11/20/17 Conjunctivitis. Curled up asleep in litter box, woke when door opened. Immediately became alert, eyes fully dilated. Screamed and swatted assess-a-hand when offered treats. 11/21/17 Curled up dozing under kuranda bed, woke and sat up when door opened. Became alert, eyes dilated, immediately started eating treats. Tolerated brief touch, then whined, hissed, and nipped assess-a-hand when tried again.
Cage Condition:: Cage is slightly re-arranged
Reaction to assessor:: Barbosa was by the front, meowing.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Barbosa meows louder and head-butts the cage door. Her tail sways from side to side as she focuses on movement inside the room.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Barbosa becomes alert and focuses on the assessor.
Reaction to touch:: Barbosa sniffs the assessor’s hand and tenses up when petting is attempted. She allows brief petting on her head, but she hisses and bats the assessor’s hand multiple times when pet along her body. She squints her eyes and appears unsure, but will only allow gentle petting when hand is kept still.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Lively
VOCAL:: Talkative
CHARACTER TYPE: : Social,Demanding,Curious
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Pet-induced aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Initially Barbosa solicits petting and attention, but after a few soft passes over the body she begins to hiss and uses her paw to bat at the assessor. This may be a sign of petting-induced aggression, where repeated physical contact results in discomfort for the cat, or it may be a sign of overstimulation. As a result of this observed behavior we recommend adopters who are familiar with signs of behavioral arousal and agitation in cats, so that interactions can be ended before Barbosa becomes reactive. Treats should be used to reward appropriate responses to physical attention.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Experienced, adult only
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Barbosa solicits attention and tolerates brief petting but may become uncomfortable during interactions. She may be fearful or stressed in the shelter. Due to only having limited interactions with Barbosa, we feel that this cat will do best in an adult only home.
