Safe - 9-21-2017 Manhattan Rescue: Feline Rescue of SI Please honor your pledges: http://felinerescueofstatenisland.org/donation/
**SAFE 09/21/2017** BAILEY is a mellow indoor cat who was nice to the kids in his former home. When those folks had “landlord problems,” they took him to the shelter where the poor guy was “TREMBLING” during the intake process. HEARTBREAKING! Please message [email protected] if YOU are able to foster/adopt this gentle soul, tonight!

09/08/17 10:17 Basic: Bailey is a 1 yr 4 month old male cat. His owner has had him for 1 yr and and a few months. He is being surrendered because of landlord issues. He has not had any injuries or health issues and has not been to a vet. Socialization: Around strangers Bailey is shy for a few minutes, or the entire time. He usually stays hidden at home. He has lived with two children ages 12 and 15 and is respectful of them. He plays gently with adults and with children. He has not spent time with other cats or pets in the home. He does not have a bite history. Behavior: Bailey is well-behaved at home; he stays under the bed or the couch. He isnt bothered during car rides. He has not had any issues with using the litter boxes, but has urinated outside of the box once. He has never gotten a bath, nail trim, or been brushed. He isnt bothered when picked up and held, or put in a carrier, or disturbed when sleeping. For New Family: Bailey is described as affectionate, shy, independent and quiet. His energy level is low. He spends most of his time hiding, but will come out and socialize with the main owner at home, who feeds him. He likes wet and dry food. He will sleep in his primary owner’s bedroom under the bed, or under the couch in the living room. He likes toys with bells in them and chasing toys. He has been kept indoors only. He uses a hooded litterbox with clumping litter. He does not have a scratching post and does not scratch on anything at home. During intake Bailey was scared and was lip licking. He was trembling as well and had dilated pupils and was sitting to the back of the carrier. He allowed the counselor to hold him, put him on her lap, look inside his mouth and pet him. He burrowed his face into her clothing and was not curious about his surroundings.

09/11/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Lived Indoors Previously lived with: Adults and two children, ages 12 and 15 Behavior toward strangers: Shy, usually stays hidden at home Behavior toward children: Respectful, playing gently Behavior toward cats or dogs: Unknown Bite or Scratch history: None Litter box training: Yes, uses a hooded litter box with clumping litter Energy level/descriptors: Bailey is described as affectionate, shy, independent and quiet. His energy level is low. Other notes: He spends most of his time hiding, but will come out and socialize with the main owner at home who feeds him. He will sleep in his primary owner’s bedroom under the bed, or under the couch in the living room. He likes toys with bells in them and chasing toys. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Observed Behavior – allows exam, nervous EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Bailey was hunched over by the back of his cubby, neutral. Reaction when softly spoken to: Bailey looks at the assessor and averts his gaze. Reaction to cage door opening: Bailey becomes stiff and alert and starts to breathe rapidly. Reaction to touch: Bailey’s ears tilt sideways as the assessor’s hand extends, but he leans forward to sniff it. He allows gentle petting with a slow approach, but remains tense and emits a high pitched grumble/whine. He continues to allow gentle strokes, but appears very uncomfortable. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Mellow VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Timid, Independent POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Fearful – Bailey has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may be uncomfortable with extended handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. RECOMMENDATIONS: – Experienced, adult home only – Bailey tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. Although his previous family reports he was respectful around children, he may be more comfortable in a home with only adults. He will need time to warm up to his new home and family. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
