02/21/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Previously lived with: Adults, 2 turtles, 1 bird, 8 dogs and 14 other cats EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cat hiding in litter box Reaction to assessor: Bailey was lying down flat in his litter box with his eyes fixated on the assessor. Reaction when softly spoken to: Bailey keeps his tail curled up at his side, lip licks and seems unsure of his surroundings. Reaction to cage door opening: Bailey remains motionless. Reaction to touch: Bailey’s eyes widen and continues lip licking when the assessor extended his hand out. He has a tense/stiff body, tolerates petting and occasionally turns around to focus on the assessor’s hand when rubbed along his back. He seems uncomfortable with contact and slowly turns his head away. ENRICHMENT NOTES: 02/20/17 Lying low at back of cage, quiet, head down, does look up and make some eye contact. Would like to be invisible. Doesn’t move when I slowly approach, allows petting all over but lip licks, seems uncomfortable. 02/21/17 During the night he created a “wall” out of his cage-liner paper, was in box and hiding behind it. When I pulled paper down he stayed lying low in box, hiding, but allowed petting all over. He lip licked while being touched and seemed uncomfortable. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Nervous, tries to flee, allows all handling. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Shy, Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: _x_ Fearful – Bailey has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: _x_ Experienced, adult home only – Bailey tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home who understands this cat may need time to warm up to his new home and family at his own pace.
