06/20/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Bagel was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Allowed handling, tries to flee ENRICHMENT NOTES: 06/18/17 Lying in kennel with a low body, ears forward. Sniffs my hand and tolerates petting with a tense body while tilting ears and remaining still. Nervous, needs more time to adjust. May be uncomfortable due to URI. Sprayed feliway. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage recently cleaned Reaction to assessor: Bagel was curled up tight in the back of the kennel. Reaction when softly spoken to: Bagel turns towards the assessor and makes eye contact, but doesn’t get up or come forward when coaxed. Reaction to cage door opening: Bagel is tense and alert. Reaction to touch: Bagel leans away and flinches when touched by the assessor. Her body feels tense/stiff, she curls up tighter and tries to avoid eye contact. After a few minutes of attention she starts to open up and leans in for cheeks and neck rubs. Reaction to being picked up: Bagel was a bit tense when picked up and curls up tight in the assessor’s arms. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Bagel has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may dislike certain types of handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced cat parent – Bagel may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
