MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Fractious, hissing, striking out, will not allow handling. 04/26/17 Hiding in feral den. She doesn’t respond or come out when called, remains unresponsive when kennel door opens. I will check on her again when she’s been moved from cat exam. Adding to socialization list. 04/27/17 Sitting crouched in litterbox with ears flat. Tilts head when I speak to her, alert and eyes focused on me. She hisses and swats at the bear-claw as it approaches – a strong swat. Not interested in further interaction today. 04/28/17 Sitting up at the front, looking around at her surroundings. Meows then leans forward to sniff. Backs away quickly and squints. Appears unsure, slowly moves away with her tail tucked under her body. Becomes alert and focused on the assessor’s movements. Leans forward to sniff, closes her eyes and tolerates petting very briefly. Gets irritated then backs away and hisses. Not fully comfortable being touched, retreats to the other side of the double kennel. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Mellow VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Baby has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
Destructive behavior – Baby is reported to have a history of scratching furniture, and should go to a home that can safely cat-proof couches, drapes in the home. We advise future adopters to make sure to provide mentally and physically stimulating toys to keep Baby occupied when left alone. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced, adult home only – Baby tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. She may have some behavioral issues that will need to be addressed in the home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
