***SAFE 10/30/17*** BABA ALLOWS GENTLE PETTING AND NEEDS A HOME TONIGHT! BABA was dumped by his owner for the “allergy” excuse. He is unsure of the shelter environment and although he grumbles he will settle down for petting. BABA needs you to give him a one way freedom ride to a new home. PLEASE RESERVE THIS SUPER GRAY BOY TONIGHT BEFORE NOON!!
Manhattan Center
Hello, my name is Baba. My animal id is #9064. I am a desexed male gray cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks i am about 2 years old. – P
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 06-Oct-2017, with the surrender reason stated as person health – allergies.
Let’s get to know each other a bit more…
Baba is at-risk with an adult only determination. He doesn’t seem to mind being around people, but will hiss and start to growl when approached for an interaction. He backs away when petting is attempted and will display distance-increasing behaviors, but will allow gentle petting and appears uncomfortable.
My medical notes are…
Weight: 12.2 lbs

Behavior Assessment Date: 10/9/2017 Retest Date: Retest Reason: Next Test Date: KNOWN HISTORY: Baba came in with a limited history so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Hissing and swatting in cage, used net for restraint, minimal exam performed d/t demeanor, growling during exam Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Baba lays in place, somewhat tense posture, and looks at the assessor. Reaction when softly spoken to: Baba continues to look at the assessor. Reaction to cage door opening: Baba hisses and starts to grumble. Reaction to touch: Baba backs away, still hissing, then settles in place and allows pets. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Mellow VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Independent POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful Potential challenges comments: Baba has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: Experienced, adult only Behavior Asilomar TM – Treatable-Manageable BEHAVIOR SUMMARY: Baba tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
Behavior 10/9/17: Experienced, Adults Only
