01/31/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Audrey was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home. Her finder was able to place her into a cat carrier and bring her to the care center. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Audrey makes eye contact with the assessor and appeared calm. Reaction when softly spoken to: Audrey’s eyes soften and she lowers her gaze. Reaction to cage door opening: Audrey becomes stiff and alert and retreats to the far end of her cubby. Reaction to touch: Audrey starts to growl and hisses as the assessor extends their hand. She does not allow touch, she spits and swats when petting was attempted. ENRICHMENT NOTES: 1/26/17 Crouched in litter box, head down, eyes dilated. Appeared tense. Tolerated pets, but closed eyes and remained immobile. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Audrey allowed handling. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Mellow VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Shy RECOMMENDATIONS: Placement with a New Hope partner Audrey is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time. POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: _x_ Fearful – Audrey has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
