Hello, my name is Athena . My animal id is #12679. I am a desexed female gray tabby kitten at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 months 1 weeks old. – P
I came into the shelter as a returns on 22-Dec-2017, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- no time for animal.
Athena is at risk for behavioral reasons. Athena accepts initial physical contact, but then proceeds to hiss, paw, and nip to prevent further interaction. Medically, we have no concerns for Athena at this time, she presents as a healthy young cat.

When I approached Athena, she hissed but allowed me to collar her. Athena allowed me to pick her up and place her into a carrier.

Basic Information:: Athena is a 4 month old female gray tabby and white domestic short haired cat. Athena lived with previous owner for about 3 weeks and was surrendered because owner’s mother did not want pets in the home. Athena has no injuries or health problems and has not seen a vet recently.
Previously lived with:: Athena previously lived with 3 adults.
How is this cat around strangers?: Athena is shy around strangers for a few minutes but will eventually approach and allows to be petted and picked up.
How is this cat around children?: Athena has not interacted with children.
How is this cat around other cats?: Athena has not interacted with cats.
How is this cat around dogs?: Athena has not interacted with dogs.
Behavior Notes: During car rides, Athena is relaxed or sleeping. Athena has never been given a bath, had her coat brushed, and has only had her nails trimmed by a vet. Athena is not bothered when being picked up and held or when being put into a carrier.
Bite history:: Athena has never bitten another animal or human.

For a New Family to Know: Athena is a playful, confident, and talkative kitten. Athena likes to play fetch and likes to follow you around at home. Athena was kept as an indoor only cat and was fed wet food 3 times a day. Athena is litter box trained and used an uncovered litter box. Athena had a scratching post made out of cardboard but she did not use it and did not scratch furniture.

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: 12/22 Observed Behavior – Hissing and would strike given opportunity but could be restrained for exam
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 12/26/17 Sitting up on bedding, soft posture, wide-eyed and alert, looking around. Reached out and patted assess-a-hand through the bars, hissed quietly. Gently nipped when first touched, then escalated to grumbling and swatting. 12/27/17 [Clicker training] Gets very excited when smelling tuna and will pounce toward the front and reach out with paws excitedly, pressing her head against the cage door. She huffs and puffs as she tries to get a hold of tuna. Quickly caught on to giving fist bumps, but she tends to grumble and swipes hard sometimes. Only rewarded whenever she gave gentle fist bumps. Kept interaction short. At the front, eyes wide and dilated, already seems to be overstimulated. Started waving energetically through the bars on approach, some grumbling. Grumbled louder when eating treats. Pawed and nipped assess-a-hand when touched. 12/28/17 Dozing at back on bedding. Woke and stretched when door opened, soft eyes and body. Leaned into a few pets, then nipped assess-a-hand. Allowed further pets while eating treats, then when done, started hissing, grumbling, nipping, and swatting.
Cage Condition:: Cage is neat
Reaction to assessor:: Athena remains neutral, lying down playing on her cage bedding during the approach.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Athena remains loose body rolling around playing with her toy, alert with soft eyes.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Athena slowly increases distance, eyes wide, ears erect and forward.
Reaction to touch:: Athena accepts a brief touch on the head, but began to hiss, paw, and nip at the assessor’s hand preventing the interaction to continue.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate
VOCAL:: Somewhat chatty

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Experienced, adult only

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Athena may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home who understands this cat may need time to warm up to her new home and family at her own pace.
