Hello, my name is Athena. My animal id is #11639. I am a desexed female orange tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years old. – P
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 03-Nov-2017, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- landlord won’t allow.
Athena is at risk due to behavior (Adult Only determination. Athena is stressed and fearful in care center and would do best in a home that will give her time to acclimate to new surroundings. There are no known medical concerns for her at this time.

She had a stiff posture and withdrew to the back of carrier but allowed to be collard, photographed and placed in a kennel.

Basic Information:: Athena is an arrange tabby female cat that was surrendered with three of her kittens. Owner got her from a friend and had her for two years and can’t keep her because she is moving to a building with a no-pets policy. Athena had no visible sign of illness or injuries.
Previously lived with:: 10 and 12 year old children
How is this cat around strangers?: She would usually observe strangers from a distance and would hid if they approached her.
How is this cat around children?: She is respectful of their space but does not interact or play with them
How is this cat around other cats?: She was playful with her kittens
How is this cat around dogs?: Unknown
Behavior Notes: She enjoys her coat brushed but struggles and jumps off when picked up or held. She struggles when placed in carrier and isn’t bothered if disturbed while asleep.
Bite history:: She has never bitten a human or another animal
Energy level/descriptors:: Medium
Has this cat ever had any medical issues?: No
For a New Family to Know: Athena is a mellow, shy and quiet cat that follows you around the home and was kept indoors only. She sleeps wherever she finds comfortable and was fed dry cat food twice daily. She is house trained, used an uncovered litter box with clay litter and scratched on a rough rope type scratch post.

Cage Condition:: Cage is neat
Reaction to assessor:: Athena remains tense, crouched position hiding in the cage cubby during the approach.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Athena becomes alert with eyes fully dilated.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Athena tightly curls up in place, ears erect and forward.
Reaction to touch:: Athena accepts the touch, but shows no interest with the interaction while she remains cautious with her surroundings.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Timid,Independent
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Experienced, adult only

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Athena may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home who understands this cat may need time to warm up to her new home and family at her own pace.
