Name and Armando #:1105703 Date: 3/10/2017 KNOWN HISTORY: Lived Indoors Previously lived with: 1 Adult Behavior toward strangers: shy Behavior toward children: Unknown Behavior toward cats: Unknown Behavior toward dogs: Unknown Bite or Scratch history: None Litter box training: Y MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Observed Behavior – hissing in carrier but easy to handle EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Did not come forward Reaction when softly spoken to: Did not come to front but remained calm Reaction to cage door opening: Remained motionless and did not respond Reaction to touch: Backed away from assess-a-hand and began hissing Reaction to being picked up: Will not permit ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Fearful Armando has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. – Uncomfortable with pick up Armando did not appear to like being picked up during his behavior evaluation. Please keep in mind there are many reasons why a cat may be uncomfortable with this type of handling and that this may not necessarily translate into a home environment. We recommend any future home with children be counseled in respecting the cat’s space and for the family to use care when picking him up, especially while he is still adjusting to his new home. RECOMMENDATIONS: – Experienced cat parent Armando tolerates some attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter. He struggles when being picked up or placing in carrier. His owner surrender states that he has tried to swat when being picked up. He may have some behavioral issues that will need to be addressed in the home.
