Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Lived indoors Previously lived with: 1 Adult Behavior toward strangers: Hides Behavior toward children: Unknown Behavior toward cats: Lived with another cats and got along well with them Behavior toward dogs: Unknown Bite or Scratch history: Yes Litter box training: None Energy level/descriptors: Fearful MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Very scared – tries to flee. Handle able in net – no hissing or growling. But did hiss when put back in cage. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: No change Reaction to assessor: Antonio was pressed up against the back wall of the kennel with wide eyes focused on the assessor. Reaction when softly spoken to: Antonio keeps her tail wrapped around her body and turns her head away when spoken to softly. Reaction to cage door opening: Antonio is tense and alert. Reaction to touch: Antonio lip licks and starts breathing rapidly when the assessor extends his hand out. He flinches when touched, has a tense body and hisses when he’s had enough. He seems very uncomfortable, wasn’t open to interacting and stays at the back of the kennel. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Antonio has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may dislike certain types of handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced, adult home only – Antonio tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. He may have some behavioral issues that will need to be addressed in the home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
