08/20/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Abraham was brought in with limited information on his behavior in his previous home. His owner reports he has bitten them before and he has recently bit another person on their arm after being pet. The owner states they had him since he was a kitten and that he appeared to have bonded well with the family, but he seems to have unprompted aggression. Details about the previous incident, including trigger, warning signs, and severity are unknown. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Observed Behavior – hissing ENRICHMENT NOTES: 8/13/17 In den, peeking through holes with fully dilated eyes. Started lip licking when spoken to, no other response. Left alone for now. 8/16/17 Crouched at front, tense, looking around. Backed up when door opened, then crouched in place again. Stiff posture, tail curled under, eyes dilated, wouldn’t make eye contact. After a long while of being spoken to quietly, started making eye contact and returning slow blinks! Sniffed treats, but didn’t eat. Slowly walked back into den, body held low. 8/17/17 In den, peeking through holes, eyes dilated. Sniffed assess-a-hand, leaned slightly away from touch. When left alone, stuck head out to sniff offered treats, but didn’t eat. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is slightly re-arranged Reaction to assessor: Abraham was inside a cat den upon approach. Reaction when softly spoken to: Abraham shifts around inside his den, but does not peek out from opening. Reaction to cage door opening: Abraham becomes alert and looks out from a peep hole, blinking. Reaction to touch: Abraham was hesitant, but sniffs the assessor’s hand with a slow approach. He accepts gentle petting, but his ears tilt and his body remains tense. He looks out and appears curious, but he also appears unsure. He allows gentle petting all over and closes his eyes, but remains crouched over. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Shy, Independent RECOMMENDATIONS: – Experienced, adult home only – Abraham tolerates attention and petting but appears to be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He will need time to warm up to his new home and family. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
